Zakharova wondered why Georgia should conform to other people’s values
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, commented on the statement of the US State Department that the Georgian authorities should abandon the course chosen in the context of the law on foreign agents. Diplomat in his Telegram channel I wondered why Georgia should conform to other people’s values.
“I would like to ask clarifying questions: is the problem that the Georgian law is much softer than the American law? Why should Georgia or any other country conform to someone else’s values?” – noted Zakharova.
Earlier, State Department Deputy Press Secretary Vedant Patel said that the Georgian authorities should abandon the course chosen in the context of the law on foreign agents, since the current approaches are not consistent with US values.
Let us remind you that on May 14, the Georgian parliament adopted the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence” in the third reading. The authorities’ decision sparked mass protests in the capital; riot police detained demonstrators.
Earlier, the White House said that the United States is ready to “fundamentally reconsider” relations with Georgia if the country’s authorities adopt a law on foreign agents.
