According to Jorge Barbarotto, from Cemaden, the Taquari and Caí rivers are filling with the rain and will flow into the lake near Porto Alegre
The hydrologist Jorge Barbarotto from Cemaden (National Center for Monitoring and Alerts for Natural Disasters), stated this Sunday (May 12, 2024) that the level of the Guaíba lake, in the center of Porto Alegre, will rise again in the coming days.
According to Barbarotto, the level will increase because the Taquari and Caí rivers will flow into the Guaíba. “All the water that is falling again in these basins, mainly Taquari and Cair, which is where there is the most rain these days […] All this water will raise the Guaíba level again” the hydrologist told Power360 .
“What can be said is that Guaíba will remain at a high level. It will rise again. We don’t know exactly how much, but it will” said Barbarotto.
The death toll rose to 143 from heavy rains in the State, according to the Civil Defense bulletin released at 12pm this Sunday (May 12).
