At least five workers were injured this Thursday in the collapse of the roof of a building under construction in the Old Town of Bilbao. The firefighters have managed to evacuate all the people who were in the property.
According to sources from the Security Department, the event occurred around 10:30 at number 24 Tendería Street in a building under construction, with workers inside. The injured are workers who were working on the rehabilitation of the building. At the time of the collapse they were working on the upper part of the building, according to sources from the Bilbao City Council. Apparently, an “accumulation of debris” on the fourth floor has caused the floor to fall onto the third floor.
Two of the workers had to be rescued by firefighters after they were trapped. The last of them was evacuated immobilized shortly before 11:30 am. Some of the injured could have suffered a bone fracture, but, in principle, it does not seem that the condition of those affected is serious.

Analysis by experts and architects is lacking to determine the precise causes of the event and the state of the damaged building, but the hypothesis is being considered that some structural element of the building may have been affected, reports Efe. Its facade, however, is not affected.
The mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, went to the scene of the accident to inquire about the condition of the injured and told the media that work was being carried out in the collapsed building to shore up the structure of the building: “It seems that “The floor between the fourth and third floors has collapsed,” he stated. The councilor has indicated that the first hypotheses suggest that “too much rubble has accumulated” in the upper part of the building, which has caused “the floor with old beams” to have fallen. Aburto has also assured that the building permits were in order. “From that point of view there is no problem,” he added.

The mayor explained that, after the inspection by technicians from the public company Surbisa and by the firefighters, it will be necessary to “prop up the building” by the staff of the development company in charge of the rehabilitation works. He added that “there is no risk to the collateral buildings or to the façade itself”, so there is no danger of collapse and this will allow the street to be opened “shortly”.
In addition to firefighters and members of the Ertzaintza and the Bilbao Municipal Police, who keep the area cordoned off, eight ambulances have been sent to the scene to treat the injured.
