We are looking for a sensible five-door hatchback for 10,000 euros. What are the options you end up with?
Winter sports cannons, fast GTs, big SUVs: at Autoblog Advice we try to cover all types. For today we have a special category: a sensible hatchback that people actually buy and that is affordable and reliable for years to come. Of course! Nothing premium, nothing V8, nothing leather wiper lines.
Sensible five-door hatchback
Because Autoblog reader Erwin is just looking for a sensible hatchback: a decent car that doesn't require you to be at the garage every week or at the pump every week. Of course, cars are just utensils too, right? Erwin currently has a Hyundai i20 from 2010. That car is a bit too small and getting too old for him. In principle, I just like the car. It's just a little too tight and getting too old, especially with a little one.
So what's to come? Well, something a size bigger. Simply more space, more comfort and more equipment. Without ending up with a Mercedes S-Class youngtimer, it must remain manageable in terms of costs. A house, household, child, wife, goat breeding association: it all costs money. That's why it's nice to have a car where you can clearly estimate the costs in advance. In short, what is the most sensible five-door hatchback for 10 grand?

Kia Cee'd 1.0 T-GDI 120 ComfortPlusLine Navigator
€9,950
2017
140,000 km
What is it?
One of the neatest cars ever built. The Kia Cee'd has a bit of a crazy marketing name, but that is the only daring thing about a car. The Kia Cee'd of this generation is simply neat. A spacious five-door hatchback, without any significant disadvantages. The thing still looks fresh in 2024.

How does it drive?
Very orderly. Just neat. In this case we have a 1.0 turbo engine with 120 hp that has 16 hp less than the previous 1.6. There is just much more torque available that is also released earlier. This ensures peace and quiet on board and lower consumption. In terms of steering, it is average: you are not going to buy it specifically for that, but you are not going to leave it alone either.

Maintenance forecast
These are very solid cars. There are actually no serious issues with the Kia Cee'd. The standard tires are not very good and can suffer from cupping. A set of quality rubber and alignment works wonders. Furthermore, there are small finishing touches that you don't have to worry about: rubbers, wishbone; that kind of work. The biggest and most annoying point is the controls. Check whether it centers properly. If that doesn't go well, you will have to replace the steering rack (and that is expensive).
Depreciation forecast
A well-maintained, neat five-door hatchback will always earn you money later. Don't forget that used car buyers pay much more attention to monthly costs and crossovers and ignore them because of the higher MRB and consumption. So then a hatchback or station wagon is a solution. Of course you will depreciate, but you can always sell these kinds of sensible cars for good money.
Toyota Auris Hatchback 1.3 Comfort
€9,900
2014
115,000 km
What is it?
A Toyota Corolla avant la lettre. Toyota wanted to make the Corolla label a little sexier and came up with a new name: Auris. Well. If Toyota designs a sensible five-door hatchback, they are within a certain pattern. So it's just a Corolla on all sides. In fact, the Toyota Auris is even available as a Corolla in some markets! Please note: you are dealing with a basic Corolla. So the equipment is very basic, as are the appearance and performance. On marketplace We only found a few petrol versions in the budget (in the Netherlands people often opted for the hybrid).

How does it drive?
Soporific, but not bad. The engine is really lifeless and would be nice in a Yaris. There is some power at the top, but at the bottom it is a lifeless coffee grinder. The rest of the driving experience is typically Japanese, so operating everything is very easy and smooth. It's not really something that gives you much pleasure, but it's also not something that bothers you. Think of it a bit like the Christian Union among cars: solid and reliable, but colorless and drawling.
Costs Toyota Auris
- Consumption: 1 to 14.73
- Fuel costs: €153
- Weight: 1,125 kg
- Motor vehicle tax: €47
- Insurance: €50
- Total costs per month: €250
Maintenance forecast
It's a Toyota, so if you just perform maintenance every year there's nothing to worry about. Next!

Depreciation forecast
Used Toyotas are relatively expensive and the Corolla is no different. Five-door Toyotas are always a golden commodity for export. This is also reflected in the prices, because they are quite expensive used. Relatively speaking, especially when they get older. This has the advantage that you have less depreciation.
Mitsubishi Lancer 1.6 Limited Edition
€9,945
2014
115,000 km
What is it?
It is still quite difficult to find sensible hatchbacks. The country used to be full of them, now it's almost impossible. The Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback is the most beautiful in this overview, it still looks good. Think of it as a Lancer Evo X, but more practical with a more economical engine. The Lancer Sportback is also very spacious for its class.
![sensible five-door hatchback](https://www.autoblog.nl/files/2024/02/verstandige-hatchback-voor-10-mille-autoblog-advies-2024-1600-008.jpg)
How does it drive?
To be very honest: not like a hatchback from 2014. You cannot compare this with a Golf or Focus. Yes, in terms of segment, but not in terms of class. Sorry. The Lancer is not that refined, especially when it comes to NVH. It is a car that clearly comes from a different era that has been kept in production for a long time. That said, the car does everything it's supposed to do and you can conveniently expect it to do. Think of it as a moving plate of oatmeal. Decorated with a few raspberries.
Mitsubishi Lancer costs

- Fuel costs: €151
- Weight: 1,205 kg
- Motor vehicle tax: €56
- Insurance: €50
- Total costs per month: €257
Maintenance forecast
It's all not that bad, actually. Most of the points of attention for this generation of Lancer apply to the Evolution So nothing to worry about.

Depreciation forecast
Despite a solid track record, people are less familiar with Mitsubishi than with Toyota. You can also see this in the residual values, which are slightly lower. Compared to the Toyota, the Lancer in question is younger, has run less and is faster and more luxurious. So you also benefit from that.
YOLO: Nissan Pulsar 1.6 DIG-T N-Connecta
€11,690 (Nissan dealer, Germany)
2016

![sensible five-door hatchback](https://www.autoblog.nl/files/2024/02/verstandige-hatchback-voor-10-mille-autoblog-advies-2024-1600-020.jpg)
What is it?
The most boring Yolo ever? The Nissan Pulsar is a model above the Micra for which we had the feeling that the marketing department did not know that the car was being delivered. It was just a sensible hatchback. The Yolo aspect is due to the slightly high new price and the engine. Most Pulsars have a 1.2 turbo with 100 hp or so and that is just fine. But you could also get it with the 1.6 DiG-T. That is basically just the engine of the Renault Clio RS, but with a manual gearbox!
How does it drive?
Very honest? Like a large B-segment car. Comparing this with a Golf VII is not fair, the Golf is (much) better on all fronts. The engine is what makes it fun. You really feel that 190 hp, especially because the Pulsar is quite light for this segment. It's just not really a sporty car with direct steering, locking and refined damping. It drives like a chipped rental car, and that certainly has its charm! And you can surprise people in their BMW 418i Corporate Lease Edition M Sport High Executive M Performance M4!
Nissan Pulsar costs
- Consumption: 1 in 14.12
- Fuel costs: €160
- Weight: 1,270 kg
- Motor vehicle tax: €65
- Insurance: €65
- Total costs per month: €290
Maintenance forecast
It's a Nissan, so very reliable. Let's ignore the fact that it contains Renault technology. No, wait, not at all: Renault builds great powertrains and this is one of them.

Nobody knows it, so you have to do your best to sell it. On the other hand: there are only a handful of them in the whole of Europe, so you will always find an enthusiast for such a device somewhere. Wondering if it can also fit Rays rims. And a Tein coilover kit. With a Veilside Bodykit. And Bride sports fairings. All joking aside: it is a bit of a difficult trade, because hardly anyone knows it. So you just have to hope that the person who buys the car from you appreciates this Pulsar so that you paid more for it.
Autoblog Advice conclusion sensible hatchback
And then we have to come up with an answer to the question of which sensible hatchback should you buy? Of the cars in this overview, we would recommend the Kia. It still looks neat, drives just fine, is still quite young, has excellent equipment and doesn't really fail anywhere. The Auris seems like a good idea, but in the budget you can only find older cars. You can consider the Mitsubishi: it looks great and a set of quality tires can make a difference, but you notice that the Kia Cee'd is a full generation more modern. The Nissan is of course a joke, but with the 1.2 engine it is also a great alternative. Nevertheless, the Kia Cee'd seems to be the most sensible choice in this group.
