Samsung seems to have agreed again with Qualcomm, this time to obtain a customized version of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, intended for the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
We already have some information about the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, but it is likely that as we get closer to the official presentation, scheduled for the beginning of next year together with the other models in the range, we will discover more and more details.
What seems almost certain is that the device, unlike its “brothers”, will use exclusively Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 developed by Qualcomm as a processor.
Although there are no official announcements yet, speculations suggest the presence of theISOCELL Zoom Anyplacea feature based on the Qualcomm AI engine to facilitate video recording by identifying moving subjects.
The result of the addition would therefore leave no doubt about the choice of processor for the Ultra model.
Snapdragon “full frequency”
A few days have passed since the announcement of Qualcomm’s latest SoC, which in the meantime made its first appearance in the Xiaomi 14 series.
Last year, the same company had collaborated with Samsung to create a custom processor called Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxywhich brought a significant increase in frequencies compared to the standard version of the chip.
According to the forecasts of Ice Universethe close collaboration will continue in 2024 with the launch of the Galaxy version of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
While the exact specs of this beefed-up chip haven’t been disclosed yet, it looks like it will make records higher clock frequencies than the regular variant.
In addition to a faster CPU, it is also assumed that there is a more powerful GPU, useful to make the gaming experience more fluid.
The information suggests that this processor will operate at an important clock frequency of 1GHz.
While this may seem like a modest improvement, it still represents a significant step up from the base chip’s 903 MHz.
It must be said that higher clock speed can mean higher heat: it will be interesting to observe how Samsung tackles thermal management on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and we will certainly have time and a way to find out.
GPU issues
Ice Universe reports that the next Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy will be powered by a robust device at 1 GHz Adreno 750 GPU.
This should be a notable improvement over the Galaxy S23 SoC, which featured an Adreno 740 GPU with a maximum clock frequency of 719 MHz, representing a projected increase of 28%.
It remains to be seen whether there will be significant differences in graphics performance between the standard SoC and the customized version intended for the Galaxy S24 series.
On the other hand, during the Samsung System LSI Tech Day 2023 event, Samsung released official data on the Xclipse 940 GPU of Exynos 2400, highlighting its capabilities in ray tracing and optical effects related to lighting, reflections and shadows in gaming contexts.
Tests on AMD’s own RDNA 3 architecture GPU also showed lower performance than Adreno; however, the models used for these phases are still prototypes and furthermore the firmware may still exhibit instability.
The Galaxy S24 is scheduled to launch in January 2024, and based on the information gathered so far, there seem to be excellent prospects for this high-end smartphone.
