Chapter 3 of “The last of us” delved into the love relationship between Bill and Frank. How did the director make it so that few people noticed this romance at the beginning of the episode?
Bill and Frank were the protagonists of chapter 3 of “The last of us”. In this way, the plot of the HBO Max series moved away from the action surrounding Joel and Ellie to focus on an LGTBIQ + romance during different stages of the Cordyceps virus pandemic. However, this warm look at the relationship between the characters sparked all kinds of reactions, mostly homophobic attacks for diverting the story into a field not explored in the original video game.
This situation was reflected in the review bombing it received “The last of us” in the pages of specialized criticism, for which this episode was described as the worst of the production. However, despite the fact that the reaction was somewhat expected, the truth is that the director of the chapter in question, Peter Hoar, structured the scenes to fool homophobes.
The brilliant hoax behind “The last of us” chapter 3
Frank arrived unexpectedly at the town where Bill lived and throughout the opening sequences there was great hostility between them. Even so, love was born and soon “The last of us” offered an emotional story. This was precisely the key to deceive a certain part of the audience to get into this plot without realizing it.
“Bill is complicated. I would say that Bill is not a gay man. (…) He is a man who never discovered himself. (…) He was never going to find out naturally who he was going to fall in love with or who he found attractive until Frank came along. And even then, it wasn’t just because he was a man, it was because he was Frank. It was because Frank is Frank”, Hoar began by explaining in an interview with Inverse.
“Sometimes you have to trick the rest of the world into seeing these things before they’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, that was two guys. I just realized.’ I think then they can understand that everything is real. It’s the same love,” she added.
