The survey included the concessions “MN216A” and “MN216B” in the Ghadames Basin, with an estimated area of 2,873 km, as well as concessions 16 and 17 in the Sirte Basin, with an estimated area of 687 km.
First move of 2011
This seismic survey is the first of its kind, conducted by a Libyan oil company, since 2011, when those projects stopped completely during the last period, according to Riyad Al-Hadi, a professor at the Faculty of Oil and Gas Engineering at the University of Al-Zawiya.
The political and security turmoil has caused many problems for the oil sector in Libya and stopped development and maintenance projects in many fields, and the latest activity of the Sirte Company came to push the rest of the companies to carry out similar works, according to Al-Hadi.
6 months for audit
In a statement, the Sirte Company said that these results were achieved “despite the difficult security and logistical conditions, especially in light of the two basins located deep in the desert,” and urged the rest of the sector companies to implement exploration projects in the concessions to enhance oil production.
But the seismic survey is just the beginning, explains the professor of petroleum engineering, who indicates that there are other steps such as data processing and interpretation, preparing models for sites, economic feasibility and development cost, and other technical procedures that need to be implemented at least six months.
Strengthening Libya’s global position
The regularity of oil production and the development of its reservoirs will reflect positively on Libya’s position in the global energy market, especially in light of the rise in prices, which pushes the country’s revenues to rise and contributes to overcoming the difficult economic situation in the country, according to political analyst, Ezz El-Din Aqeel.
However, in the international arena, attention must be paid to the current conflict of interests, in light of the division of positions between the western ranks led by the United States, and the eastern, which includes Russia and China, as Aqil explains, calling for attention not to deplete Libyan capabilities, which represents a “burning” of them and production including It achieves its goals away from the turbulent policies internationally.
1.2 million barrels of oil per day
The Ghadames Basin is located in northwest Libya, and extends over an area of 390,000 square kilometers, as it extends to the Tunisian and Algerian lands, and its reserves are estimated at 3.5 billion barrels of oil. 80% of Libya’s total reserves, estimated at 41.5 billion barrels, according to the last geological survey conducted in 2007.
Libyan oil production exceeded 1.2 million barrels per day, in addition to 49,000 barrels of condensate per day, according to the latest statistics issued by the National Oil Corporation.
