As Mombyry and Yvoty play on the lawn with their mother, the conservationists sing victory. The two jaguar cubs are the hope to reverse the extinction of their species in Argentine wetlands and have been captured for the first time in a video recorded in July and released this week. These are the conservation fruits of the Rewiliding Foundation, which launched in 2021 a project for the reinsertion of this species in the Iberá Park, in the province of Corrientes.
Already in July the birth of two other cubs had been confirmed, children of Aramí, a female born in captivity and released in the national park last year, and Jatobazinho, from Brazil. The new pups are descendants of Mariua, the first female introduced to the conservation site. In Argentina there are about 250 jaguar specimens, also known as yaguareté, living in freedom.
