During Q1, Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) he completed only three laps on the track, taking the second partial position behind Max Verstappen (Red Bull). The 1’22.180 was the only fastest lap set by the Monegasque, who then chose not to return to the track. In the hours following qualifying, in which Leclerc then obtained the pole position at the end of Q3, it was disseminated through the social network a frontal still image of the Ferrari driver’s Q1 lapin which it would seem to exceed the limits of the track in Turn 7. A circumstance that cost the cancellation of the lap in question for Lando Norris (McLaren) and twice for Kevin Magnussen (Haas) right in Q1 and Fernando Alonso (Alpine) in Q3 right in that section of the circuit.
From the notes of the Race Direction, Curve 7 (together with 2, 4 and 10) was precisely among the areas of the track in which the drivers could not exceed the limits.
But of the possible infringement by Leclerc – not investigated by the commissioners – it is difficult to find correspondence in the on board video of the poleman, for which there can be no absolute certainty:
Journalist Mubtadiin Ditya (@ditya_mub) on Twitter then compared Leclerc’s lap in Q1 deemed good, with Alonso’s last lap of Q3 and Norris’s second in Q1, both canceled. From the comparison it emerges that the Ferrari driver would seem to have a minimum of contact with the front right with the white line, unlike the Spaniard and the British.
