Taoyuan International Airport increased its security level after registering a bomb threat today, A few hours before the possible arrival on the island tonight of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, the Taiwanese news agency CNA reported.

The operating company of the airport, the largest in Taiwan and located 24 kilometers from the capital, Taipei, received a threat this Tuesday morning that warned of the placement of three explosive devices in its facilities.
The Police, quoted by CNA, explained this afternoon that they had found “nothing suspicious” inside the airport grounds. The Taiwan Aviation Police Bureau said it had assigned a patrol to “strengthen airport security and ensure flight stability.”
The incident “has passed into the hands of prosecutors” for investigation. Recently, since the US media advanced the possibility of Pelosi’s trip, both military and civilian Chinese representatives have warned of possible consequences of the US official’s trip.
Chinese President Xi Jinping himself asked his American counterpart, Joe
Biden, “don’t play with fire” in the phone conversation they had last week.
China insists on “reunifying” the People’s Republic with the island, which has been governed autonomously since the Kuomintang (KMT) nationalists withdrew there in 1949 after losing the civil war against the communists and continued with the regime of the Republic of China, which culminated in the transition to democracy in the 1990s. But since then the voices claiming to declare the independence of Taiwan as a sovereign state have gained strength.
Taiwan is one of the main sources of conflict between China and the US, mainly because Washington is Taiwan’s main arms supplier and would be its greatest military ally in the event of a war with the Asian giant.
