Ranil Wickremesinghe served as prime minister for 6 terms; he received 134 votes out of the 112 needed to be elected
The Sri Lankan Parliament elected a new president this Wednesday morning (20.Jul.2022). Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was chosen to assume the post.
Wickremesinghe has served as prime minister for 6 terms. The choice could cause protests in the country. Among the demands of the protesters who toppled the president was the departure of Wickremesinghe.
The winner got 134 votes, while his main rival, Dullas Alahapperuma, won 82. To guarantee victory, 112 votes were needed.
3rd place went to Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who only got 3 votes.
