The activities of the “11th edition” of the World Games, hosted by Birmingham, Alabama, in America, opened from July 7 to 17, with the participation of 3,600 athletes from 100 countries, competing in 36 sports.
At the opening ceremony held at the World Games Stadium in Birmingham, our national air sports team carried the UAE flag. The ceremony lasted for 3 hours, during which artistic performances, lyrical and other cultural performances related to the host city were presented.
The UAE will participate in the tournament with 13 male and female players, in 4 games, namely Ju-Jitsu, in which we are represented by Faisal Al Ketbi, who weighs 85 kg, Muhammad Al Suwaidi, who weighs 69 kg, Muhammad Al Omari, who weighs 77 kg, Shamma Al Kalbani, who weighs 63 kg, and Balqis Abdul Karim, who weighs 63 kg. 48 kg, as we are represented in Muay Thai Nour El Din Samir with a weight of 63.5 kg, Muhammad Mardi with a weight of 67 kg, Amin Al-Mu’tasim with a weight of 71 kg, and Elias Habib with a weight of 81 kg.
Saud Al Zaabi and Faris Al Zaabi will participate in the Duathlon competition, while Abdul Bari Al Qubaisi and Cornelia Mihai will compete in the parachute jump competition in air sports.
The UAE delegation participating in the activities of the session is headed by Engineer Azza bint Sulaiman, Assistant Secretary for Administrative and Financial Affairs of the National Olympic Committee, where our national air sports team begins our 3-day participation at the Auto Circuit in Birmingham.
The UAE achieved 4 medals in the history of participation in the World Games, which began in the eighth edition in 2009 in Taiwan, where it won the bronze medal in the snooker competition by Muhammad Shehab, while Faisal Al Ketbi, a player of the jujitsu team, succeeded in winning the gold and silver medals in the tenth edition that was held in Poland. In 2017, the air sports team in the same version added a bronze medal in the parachute jump competition for the mixed category.
The UAE occupies the 66th place in the general ranking table of the World Games, while Italy leads the table with 439 medals, followed by America in second place with 382 medals, and then Germany (385 medals), due to the preference for the second place holder, in terms of the number of gold medals.
The delegations participating in the meeting were briefed on many important points, procedures for the session, and the mechanism for registering sports delegations.
