If convicted, the shooter could face life in prison with no chance of parole, the prosecutor said.
The shooting during the July 4 Parade in Highland Park left seven dead and dozens injured. Robert Crimo, as the suspect in the shooting is called, fired more than 70 bullets into the crowd from a rooftop. He was arrested hours later after a short chase. He wore women’s clothes to make it easier to escape.
Crimo had already been in contact with the police twice in 2019. In one of those cases, he would have threatened to ‘kill everyone’, according to the police. The police also received a report that year that he had attempted suicide.
In the incident in which Crimo threatened to kill, a family member called the police in Highland Park, the Chicago suburb where he would eventually kill seven people. The police then retrieved 16 knives, a dagger and a sword from Crimo’s home. At the time, police said there was no reason to arrest him and there were no casualties.
According to the police, Crimo had legally acquired the weapons he had used on Independence Day.
