Among the innovations included in the Formula 1 sporting regulations by the FIA World Council held in Paris, one concerns the qualifying format.
In two weekends of 2023, not yet selected, each driver will have 11 sets of slick tires available (instead of the usual 13) and will have to return one at the end of the FP1 session and one of the FP2.
In these two weekends, Pirelli will supply each driver with 3 sets of hard, 4 medium and 4 soft tires. In the case of dry qualifying, the main novelty will be the obligation to use a compound that varies from session to session. In Q1 the drivers will have to use hard compounds, in Q2 the medium and in Q3 the soft, without limitations on the number of sets to be used in the session based on availability.
FIA, Liberty Media and Pirelli will analyze the feedback that will come from this format, evaluating the possibility of a wider use in the future, since it allows to save the number of sets of tires to be transported on the racing fields.
It is the same approach used for the sprint qualifying, and with regard to the qualifying heat (which will never be concomitant with the new format with compulsory compounds) in the new meeting of the Formula 1 Commission no increase was discussed for next year. A new Commission meeting is scheduled for Spielberg weekend next week.
