The victory of the left in Colombia has given Brazil the hope of defeating the far-right government of Jair Bolsonaro in October. The strengthening of democratic movements on the continent hinders the risk of an authoritarian coup heavily announced by Bolsonaro if he loses the elections.
The Colombian elections reinforce the progressive candidacy of Lula da Silva, who already leads all the polls. Here it is already taken for granted that Gustavo Petro will invite Lula to his inauguration, which would mean a new accolade for his victory and for the weakening of Bolsonaro and his extremist hosts.
Until now, the Bolsonarists used the example of Venezuela against Lula’s candidacy, alleging that Brazil would go down this extreme left path, something that will be difficult for them after the surprise in Colombia, where for the first time in its history the left has won smoothly. putschists and where the defeated, a right-wing populist, has peacefully accepted his defeat.
This has led the most important media in the country to give special prominence to the Colombian victory of the left, despite the fact that information from Latin America does not usually stand out in these media. And it is that today the majority of Brazilians are committed to freeing themselves from the nightmare of a government that has not only worsened the economic crisis to the point where millions of families suffer from hunger, but has also alienated the country from the rest of the world with its disastrous foreign policy.
The victory of the progressives in Colombia has coincidentally given greater prominence to an initiative by Chico Buarque, the idol of the song since the days of the dictatorship. Buarque had just announced a tour across the country to launch his new, subtle and emblematic song titled: How about a samba? which is a cry of hope for better times for this country tormented by the clouds of pessimism sown by Bolsonarism.
It is a samba that recognizes even the poorest and least educated people and that comes at the most propitious moment in a country that wants to bet on hope after the last dark years that have led to the political slogan of “anyone but Bolsonaro” to govern a country that is an entire continent and one of the greatest economic powers on the planet.
This is how the new samba of hope by the great Chico Buarque that will resonate throughout the country reads: “Una samba. How about a samba? Push a samba how about? To ward off ugly weather. To remedy the disaster. How about a drink? A relief, a flirtation, a samba to brighten the day, to finish the game. Heart catching fire. And cool head. A samba with category, calmly”.
Quite an intelligent game that tries to interpret the current moment that Brazilians who are committed to the values of democracy are experiencing. At just 78 years old, the genius of Brazilian song, also considered a poet who knew how to challenge the military dictatorship itself with his art, returns to the stage, this time to avert the danger of the return of sabers and political barbarism and morality and to prophesy the joyous return to samba of a country that knows like few others how to find spaces of happiness even in the midst of its worst storms.
