The sculpture dedicated to Margherita Hack was inaugurated today in Milan
The sculpture dedicated to Margherita Hack was inaugurated today in Largo Richini in Milan. The project was promoted by the Deloitte Foundation, in collaboration with the Casa degli Artisti and with the support of the Municipality of Milan – Art Office in Public Spaces. The ceremony was attended by Tommaso Sacchi (Councilor for Culture of Milan), Guido Borsani (President of the Deloitte Foundation), Fabio Pompei (CEO of Deloitte Italy), Elio Franzini (Rector of the State University of Milan), Valentina Kastlunger (President of the Casa degli Artisti), Sissi (artist author of the work and Bolognese academic) and Simona Cerrato (researcher and science popularizer).
Bronze sculpture, 270 cm high
The sculpture, made of bronze and 270 cm high, was installed on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of astrophysics and represents the first work of art on public land, in Milan and in Italy, dedicated to a female scientist. The work was donated to the Municipality of Milan by the Deloitte Foundation, which will take care of the ordinary and extraordinary maintenance for the years to come.
Guido Borsani: “Tribute to scientific merits”
Guido Borsani, President of the Deloitte Foundation, commented: “The sculpture represents a tribute to the scientific merits of Margherita Hack, but above all it wants to offer a positive model for future generations. This is a project in which the Deloitte Foundation firmly believes and which is part of a path that began two years ago with the establishment of the Observatory on STEM subjects, born with the aim of stimulating girls and boys to undertake study paths in the field technical-scientific. Today, with the installation of this work, we hope to offer young people – and especially girls – a model to inspire them. A model that pushes them to be curious, to study, to understand the world through science “.
The bronze sculpture represents Margherita Hack as a metamorphosis
The work entitled “Physical look” is by the Bolognese artist Sissi. The bronze sculpture represents Margherita Hack as a metamorphosis: a person born from the elements of a galaxy and engaged in studying the stars that form it. Her body is an intense gray color: she emerges from the magma of life that pulsates inside the earth’s crust. The hands of gold color, like the stars embedded in the galaxy are raised to the sky to look through you without tools. The title “Physical gaze” plays with his astro-physics identity: “Gaze” is the sense capable of perceiving luminous stimuli, “Physical” not only recalls the root of his profession, but also the concreteness and solidity of his intellectual and philosophical attitude. The work won the ideas competition launched in July 2021, which was joined by 8 Italian and international artists. It was built between February and May 2022 with and at the Ceramica Gatti art workshop in Faenza and the De Carli artistic foundry in Turin, with the support of Casa degli Artisti.
Valentina Kastlunger: “As Casa degli Artisti we are proud to have been part of this project”
Valentina Kastlunger, President of Casa degli Artisti added: “As a Casa degli Artisti we are proud to have been part of this project. A collective project, which brought together the work of many people and many different worlds: science, art, business, public institutions and non-profit organizations. For our part, we are convinced that art can play an important role in redefining the public space, both material and immaterial. Choosing a scientist, a woman and an interpreter of the contemporary like Margherita Hack as a model is significant. Choosing to do so through the language of art, donating to Milan the work of an artist who has managed to reinterpret the concept of monument without distorting it but without remaining imprisoned, to respect the difficult criterion of recognizability by inserting immediately understandable symbolic and conceptual elements. even to casual passers-by, he is far-sighted. “
