Egan Bernal, a Colombian cyclist from the Ineos team, will travel to Europe in the coming days to continue his recovery, after the accident on January 24.
Bernal will continue his rehabilitation process in the old continent at the hands of the Ineos specialists.
‘He’s cured’
But the news is even more positive. doctor Gustavo Uriza, who treated Egan from the moment of his accident, revealed the progress in the cyclist’s recovery and gave a date for his return to competition.
“This is a first for us. Today we did control scans of Egan’s spine, the accident was on Monday, January 24, and today (Tuesday) marks 92 days. I want to tell you that the odontoid fracture is completely consolidated and how it was done. with a transodontoid screw, then there is no involvement of the craniocervical junction, that is, the fracture is healed,” the doctor said in a virtual conference of the National Academy of Medicine.
In addition, in that talk, in which Egan was present, the doctor specified: “From the dislocation T5 T6, the CT shows consolidation of the fracture, bone callus in front where it was dislocated, I put a box to give it space between the two vertebrae. There is a large bony callus. And the joints of the vertebrae above and below the bill are preserved, function well, and all the fractures of the rib, the costal ones, are healed with bone callus”.
And finally, he finished off with what he considered the great scoop. “That is to say that from day 120 of the accident (May 24) I think Egan can torque, stand on the pedals and start competing in shape. His coaches in Europe must give the go-ahead, but from me the news is that”.
Egan travels to Europe
Bernal asked the British squad for permission to travel to Europe after presenting ‘EB Project’, his new project, with which he seeks to help young figures in Colombian cycling. The trip will be this Thursday. Egan is eager to get back to racing.
“This weekend arrives, I get off the plane and the first thing I do is ride a bike. I’m going to travel with my dad so he can come with me on the bike in case I have any problems. For me, I’d already be competing, I’m ready I put on a number, surely it would not end, but the fact of putting a number on the shirt would be exciting,” Egan said in the same talk.
Egan Bernal’s collision with a bus, which was stopped on the roads of Cundinamarca, occurred on January 24 of this year. That same day, the reigning Giro d’Italia champion was admitted to the Sabana University Clinic. In that medical center he was operated on five times.
The Colombian cyclist was discharged on January 28. From then on, he began the arduous recovery of it.
