The pegasus case of alleged espionage to the independence movement has focused this Wednesday the session of control to the Government in the Congress of Deputies. The Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, has been questioned by the ERC, JxCat, the PNV and the CUP about this scandal, which threatens the stability of the Pedro Sánchez Executive. In the last of the questions that he had to answer during the session, Robles asked CUP deputy Mireia Vehí: “What does a State, a Government, have to do when someone violates the Constitution, when someone declares independence, cuts public roads, when carrying out public disorders, when someone is having relations with political leaders of a country that is invading Ukraine?
The minister added that for this separatist force “it is very convenient now to appear as victims, but I have never seen them defend the basic principles of the rule of law or the rights and freedoms of all, absolutely all citizens.” In addition, after insisting that the CNI always works under scrupulous respect for legality, she has suggested that those who are now scandalized will be surprised when they discover who has really robbed their mobile phones.
This reflection by Robles has been described as “insulting” by the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonés, who has demanded the resignation of the minister. The independentistas and United We Can consider that Robles has thus justified espionage.
And it has also been one more reason for the Republicans to insist on their decision to punish the Government with their vote against the decree of anti-crisis measures that must be validated in Congress this Thursday. “For now, ask Mr. Casero for the phone number”, the ERC spokesman, Gabriel Rufián, snapped at the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, at the beginning of the Executive control session while Bildu warned again: “We do not want the Government is going to sink… but they are taking time to take forceful measures”.
The control session of the Government in Congress has been at all times stressed by the case of alleged espionage. “The question is whether this time you ordered the espionage: if you ordered it, it is terribly serious, but if you did not order it, it is terribly more serious, because they have not cleaned the sewers,” summarized Gabriel Rufián, ERC spokesman and key ally. for the validation of the decree. Sánchez has defended the CNI and has promised to “be accountable” for the existence and perpetrators of the alleged espionage.

Despite all the government’s attempts, the pegasus case continues to grow politically and is already cracking the majority a few hours before a decisive vote: this Thursday, when the decree has to be validated with more than 6,000 million euros in aid to various sectors and tax cuts to reduce the impact of inflation. The Executive has multiplied its gestures with ERC to try to convince its ally of its willingness to clarify what happened and offer credible explanations. It has even assumed the political cost of changing the majority to constitute the official secrets commission, from three-fifths to absolute, to circumvent the PP’s veto of Bildu and perhaps ERC. But Republicans remain dissatisfied, and they keep up the pressure.
