Russia claims it is “worried” about NATO military exercises in northern Norwaystating that this causes the risk of “unintentional accidents”. This is what Nikolai Korchunov, ambassador general of the Russian foreign ministry, president of the committee of senior officials of the Arctic Council, told TASS.
“The internationalization of the Alliance’s military activities in high latitudes, involving non-Arctic NATO states, can only cause concern. In this regard, there are risks of unintended accidents which, in addition to security risks, can also cause serious damage to the fragile Arctic ecosystem, “said the diplomat, arguing that” regular NATO military exercises in northern Norway do not help to ensure the security of the region “.
The possible accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO is also destined, according to Moscow, to damage security in the Arctic. “I would like to note that Stockholm and Helsinki’s longstanding commitment to non-alignment policy with military alliances has been an important factor of stability and security in the Northern European region, on the European continent as a whole,” concluded Korchunov.
