Earlier it became known that McDonald’s will suspend work in Russia from March 14. The press service of the company explained that this is due to operational, technical and logistical difficulties. It is noted that the monthly cost of McDonald’s to ensure the fulfillment of all obligations to employees and suppliers will be up to $50 million.
The fact that McDonald’s will close all 850 restaurants in Russia, said on March 8, the head of the chain, Chris Kempchinski. He noted that it is not yet possible to say when the establishments will work again.
As the next day, a source close to the company’s management told Izvestia that McDonald’s in Russia has not yet been completely closed – it is about suspending work for three months.
On March 10, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that Russian catering chains could replace the closing McDonald’s restaurants within a year. There are 250 of them in the capital. He added that the authorities will ask newly opened enterprises to make the most of the personnel potential that works at McDonald’s.
Foreign companies are suspending cooperation with the Russian Federation against the backdrop of Western sanctions that were introduced after Moscow launched an operation to protect civilians in the Donbass on February 24.
A few days earlier, the situation in the region had escalated due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. The authorities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of residents to Russia, and also turned to Moscow for help. On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree recognizing the independence of the DNR and LNR.
