The Emirati Special Olympics players presented the great achievement they achieved in the Malta 2022 Games organized by the Special Olympics to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, President of the State, “may God protect him”, wishing His Highness success in continuing the path of goodness and development established by the founding fathers.
The UAE Special Olympics delegation was able to win 16 medals in the Malta Games, which started on May 13, with 6 gold, 8 silver and 2 bronze medals. UAE Special Olympics players participated in bowling, swimming, and bocce, with more than a thousand players from Special Olympics institutions around the world. The Emirati participation was the only Arab in the games, and the second from outside Europe with the United States of America out of a total of 23 countries that participated in the games. In the biggest achievement since the 2019 World Games and the first international games for the Special Olympics International in Europe since the COVID-19 pandemic receded.
Top spot in swimming
Our swimmer Omar Al-Shami came first in the 50m breaststroke, and Al-Shami came first in the 50m freestyle competition, achieving two golds in the games. Al-Zubaidi came second in the 50m butterfly competition, and third place in the 50m freestyle competition.
The participation of the Special Olympics 2022 came under the auspices of Aldar Properties, and the Integrated Transport Center provided all the support needed by the players in their transportation, and the Special Olympics had held competitions between the clubs of people of determination in the country to choose the best players participating in Malta 2022.
Shine in bocce
The bocce players excelled in our delegation. Faisal Al-Marzouki, Shaima Al-Naqbi and Hamda Murad won the first places, and Abdulaziz Al-Gharib came third in the individual bocce competitions. In the male bocce doubles competition, Abdulaziz Al-Gharib and Faisal Al-Marzouki won the second place. Hamda Murad and Shaima Al-Naqbi came in the second place. Second place in the women’s doubles competitions.
Great uniform performance in bowling
On the level of unified bowling competitions, the UAE Special Olympics participated in the bowling competitions with a unified team, which included two players of people of determination, Saleh Al Marri and Mariam Al Hosani, with two players from the national bowling team, Reem Jamal and Abdullah Al Jaidi. The four participants took second place in the team competitions, and Reem Jamal and her colleague Maryam Al Hosani achieved first place in the unified female doubles bowling competition, and Abdullah Al-Jaidi and Saleh Al-Marri achieved second place in the male doubles competitions. In terms of individual competitions; Maryam Al Hosani achieved second place in the bowling singles competition, and Saleh Al Marri ranked fourth, in the same competition.
Her Excellency Shamma bint Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the UAE Special Olympics Foundation, said: “We are proud of the impressive results achieved by the UAE Special Olympics athletes during their participation in the Malta 2022 Games. Before the start of the games, we organized a closed camp for them before they traveled to Malta, but they exceeded our expectations, and their performance was honorable, reflecting the strategy of the UAE in supporting and empowering people of determination, and pushing them to participate internationally in various events.
She said: I extend my sincere thanks to the Embassy of Malta to the country and the Government of Malta, which supported the participation of our players from the moment the UAE Special Olympics was chosen to participate in the Malta 2022 Games and during their participation in the Games. In a generous gesture, Ambassador Maria Camilleri visited the Emirati Special Olympics players at their training camp in Zayed Sports City before their travel, and her visit had a good impact on our players and all the technical staff, and also thanks to Aldar Properties for sponsoring our team, as well as the Integrated Transport Center for sponsoring and supporting the players’ movements They are our partners in the achievement.
