In 2020 Franco Morbidelli he put a capital season on the track, so much so that he won two wins and placed himself at the second place in the world ranking behind Joan Mir. The Italian rider on the Yamaha Petronas had put his teammate Fabio Quartararo behind him by 31 points, demonstrating great skill in managing the strengths and weaknesses of the M1. In 2021, however, despite the excellent results obtained, the Malaysian team provided him with a one-year old bike, giving that factory bike to the new garage colleague, Valentino Rossi. The season of ‘Morbido’ therefore started uphill (although there was a podium in Jerez), but it fell with the knee ligament injury that stopped him for some races. Upon returning after five races, after the Vinales case, the Roman driver was promoted to the official team, without however obtaining significant results due to the slow recovery from the operation.
It was thought that 2022 could be the year of redemption for the member of the VR46 Academy, but it did not, as the Italian finished only once in the top ten (7th in Indonesia) and managed to add up the misery of 26 points in 13 races, a huge difference compared to Quartararo, currently at 200. In the next season there will be only two – and no longer four – the Yamahas on the grid, and they will again be entrusted to the Franco-Italian couple, with Morbidelli who will try again, thanks to a further year of contract. In these days Lin Jarvis, director of the official team, he dismissed any hypothesis of early termination of the agreement: “Frankie stays, everything else is nonsense “he told the Germans of Speedweek. The rumor that had spread in the paddock concerned in fact a possible meeting of Morbidelli with Razali, in the Aprilia RNF team, with the Malaysian manager who has not yet made official his riders.
