The protagonist of today’s review is World War Z, but in its Nintendo Switch version. Yes, finally the hordes of zombies have also landed on the hybrid console of the Grande N. Despite this year we have seen titles like Back 4 Blood who tried to make horde shooters come back into vogue, this port also succeeds in the mission of making us – again – itch our hands and make us cum want to shoot some undead. The title was already available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, and from 2 November (a more than appropriate date) also on Switch.
A good shooter
World War Z is a tie-in, based on the film of the same name released in 2013. Obviously the two share the story, since it is a zombie-themed title and film: in a world now “dominated” by these undead, a group of people must survive. In the case of the video game made by Saber Interactive, you will have seven classes and characters that you can use: Gunslinger, Ravager, Butcher, Doctor, Mechanic, Exterminator And Dronist. Each of these has a number of skills that can be upgraded, for this reason the more you go on in the adventure, the more likely you are to survive, but the difficulty of the game will always be higher. This is one of the best factors of World War Z, because you can shape the title however you like, making it as close as possible to your style of play.
As you can imagine if you’ve seen the movie, the games are mainly focused on two things: surviving waves of zombies and reach point B so as to pass to the next “sub-level”. Yes, because each part of the Campaign is divided into different parts also allowing self-rescue. Truly convenient feature on Nintendo Switch, because if you will enjoy the game for example in portability during a trip, you won’t have to repeat the same sections, especially date the lack of checkpoints. Not only that, it is very difficult to run out of ammunition because “refreshment” points are positioned on the map, where you can reload your weapons (sometimes there are also new ones available, ed), so as to be ready for the new wave. A very clever thing that tests the survival skills of the players and, above all, it becomes a fundamental part of the game strategy.
During the adventure you will travel the world, so you can try all the classes available, understanding which one is the most suitable for you. Unfortunately in this port for Nintendo Switch it is missing a few features that would have been really useful, especially when played in the dock. In fact you will not have access to the gyroscope and the touchscreen functions are disabled, so from the point of view of mere porting, we can say that it is a simple “Bringing game X to a new platform”. Not only that, the new downloadable content is not even available. A decidedly questionable choice, given that they are often present when porting operations are performed, so that those who buy this new version, perhaps waiting a long time, have access to all the content that the developers have prepared.
From a multiplayer point of view, the title is currently suffering a lot from matchmaking and it is very difficult to find teammates. During our trial to write this review of World War Z, we often found ourselves waiting a long time for be able to find a teamThis is because, usually, the titles that belong to the aforementioned genre are played by groups of friends. So if you plan to buy it, do it together with other friends without platform limitations, since the title has the crossplay function. The game will allow you to play up to a maximum of four players, so call three friends and have fun taking out zombies!
Compromises to survive
Obviously this version of World War Z is the port for one less powerful platform compared to a PC or even other home consoles, of this generation or the last. For this reason Saber Interactive had to compromise to allow the title to run well on Nintendo Switch as well. In fact, from the graphic point of view there are some visible downgrades, but this choice was made to perform discreetly even in excited moments: just pay attention to the tides of zombies that run towards you, or to blow up a barrel to take out as many. possible, and you will notice how the game continues to run well, which is definitely something fundamental for a game like this, which puts the frenzy and adrenaline first.
From the audio point of view, as in many horror titles, it is undoubtedly well done and manages to make you understand exactly where to find the enemies, especially if you will be using headphones. The animations are quite smooth and the whole game runs well, and during the test we did not find no kind of bugs or glitches.
If we wanted to briefly summarize this review by World War Z, we could say that the title is in a perfect balance. It’s not a bad game, but it doesn’t excel either. Definitely nice to play, especially if you love this genre and have friends with whom you share this passion. The port is well done, albeit some features are missing that would have made the adventure even more enjoyable, since it would have gone to exploit the console to one hundred percent. So, the zombies have arrived on Nintendo Switch, will you be able to survive?
