Current president Nicolás Maduro has 24.6% of voting intentions; more than 80% of voters say they will vote on July 28
A survey conducted by the Delphos Institute indicates that Edmundo González Urrutia (Mesa de la Unidad Democrática, center-left), has almost 60% of voting intentions in the Venezuelan elections, scheduled for Sunday (July 28, 2024). He represents the coalition formed in opposition to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro (United Socialist Party of Venezuela, left), who appears in 2nd place in the race, with 24.6%.
A total of 1,200 face-to-face interviews were conducted from July 5 to 11 throughout Venezuela. Respondents were over 18 years old and registered to vote. The margin of error is plus or minus 1.8 percentage points. Here is the fullin Spanish (PDF – 3 MB).
Voting in the country is not mandatory. According to the survey, the turnout rate is expected to be high: 80.6% of respondents said that, “for sure”, would vote. Another 12% said that “perhaps” vote. Already 6.5% responded that “difficultly” will vote and 0.9% declared that “never” would vote.
59.1% of those interviewed intend to vote for Edmundo González Urrutia. Maduro has 24.6%. The other candidates do not exceed 1.4%. 9.2% of voters still do not know who to vote for and 2.8% chose the option “none of the candidates”.
When asked whether political change is needed in Venezuela, respondents responded:
- very necessary – 42.5%;
- necessary – 30.8%;
- not very necessary – 21.5%;
- don’t know – 5.3%.
Maduro’s management was rated as “excellent” by 4.8% of respondents and “good” by 21.7%. Another 25.1% chose the “bad” option and 47.2% said it was “very bad”. 1.3% did not know how to respond.
Regarding expectations for the result of Sunday’s election (28 July), those interviewed responded that:
- the opposition wins and takes power – 35.4%;
- Maduro wins and remains in power – 26.7%;
- the opposition wins, but Maduro remains in power – 20.8%;
- there will be no election – 2.8%;
- don’t know – 14.4%.
Maduro said on Monday (22.Jul.2024) that he will win the elections “of washing” and does not want “show, no crying” from the opposition. On June 20, the Venezuelan president publicly pledged to respect the election results in response to concerns from the opposition and international observers about the integrity of the electoral process. However, he stated that Urrutia was planning a coup d’état.
On Wednesday (17.Jul), Maduro stated that the country could end up in “blood bath” It is “civil war” if he loses the election. He asked voters to ensure the “greatest victory” of the country’s electoral history.
“On July 28, if you don’t want Venezuela to fall into a bloodbath, into a fratricidal civil war as a result of the fascists, ensure the greatest success, the greatest victory in the electoral history of our people.”, said the Venezuelan leader.

The president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, 61, leads an autocratic regime with no guarantees of fundamental freedoms. For example, he keeps people imprisoned for what he considers “political crimes”.
