More and more countries are giving their consent to the use of Western weapons against Russia. The Kremlin is facing a “critical” phase for the situation in the Ukraine war.
Moscow – Western weapons in the Ukraine war may in future also be used against targets in Russia. More and more countries are now giving the relevant permission. It is currently unclear what effects this will have on the war in Ukraine, but the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) sees the war in Ukraine in a decisive phase due to Western weapons. This could play a decisive role in the defense of Ukrainian territory and future counter-offensives.
Ukraine and its Western partners have been thrown off balance by Russia’s ongoing offensive in Kharkiv Oblast in the country’s northeast. The offensive has exposed the weaknesses of Ukraine’s armed forces and raised fears that further attacks could lead to significant Russian breakthroughs, reports Newsweek.
Kiev continues to fight against Russia in the Ukraine war: losses are high
At the beginning of the Kharkiv offensive, Ukraine was barely able to repel the Russian troops. The use of Western weapons, especially those provided by the USA, was limited in coordination with Western backers – to attacks on Russian targets on occupied Ukrainian territory. Despite knowing the composition of Russia’s troops and equipment, the Ukrainians were unable to carry out a preventive strike before the start of the offensive. The result was significant losses in the Ukraine war.
The US and Germany have now joined NATO allies in authorising Ukrainian attacks on Russia with Western weapons. President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office confirmed media reports that the White House had authorised the use of Western weapons in the Ukraine war, but only in areas near the border with Kharkiv.
Loud Politico should be President Joe Biden have quietly ordered Ukraine to use certain weapons to conduct military operations against Russian targets in the border region. This decision came into effect, according to reports in the newspaper The Financial Times on Thursday. Several of Biden’s advisers told the New York Times in an article published on May 29, that a limited departure from U.S. policy to limit attacks on Russia was “inevitable.”
Western restrictions strengthen Russia’s protective space
According to the ISW However, it is unclear whether the US will allow Ukrainian forces to advance into Belgorod Oblast or whether Ukraine will be allowed to attack Russian troops in Kursk and Bryansk Oblasts. ISW also stressed that Russian military targets outside the immediate border area with Kharkiv Oblast were also legitimate targets and that continued restrictions on Ukraine attacking targets elsewhere in Russia would undermine its defense capabilities.
Russia will continue to benefit from a certain level of protection as long as Western states limit Ukraine’s ability to defend itself, the ISW. Nevertheless, it is obvious that with Western weapons and clearance for operations against targets in Russia, Ukraine will be able to slow down Russia’s advance in the Ukraine war more effectively.
