The US Senate agrees on stricter federal gun laws. A group of senators from both parties presented a bill on Tuesday that has been negotiated for weeks. This was prompted by several mass shootings that recently shocked the US.
The bill’s framework includes modest restrictions on new firearms, such as provisions that help states to keep weapons out of the hands of people who are considered a danger to themselves or others. Arms buyers between the ages of 18 and 21 are also subject to stricter background checks. The bill is linked to an additional $15 billion for mental health services and investments in school safety.
Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer said the Senate is likely to hold its first procedural vote later on Tuesday, leading to an actual vote. The latter will happen at the end of this week or else next week. Given the support that exists in both sides, that vote will be a formality.
After that, the bill still has to be approved by the House of Representatives, where the Democrats have a majority. Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi previously said he was willing to pass any bill that passes the Senate that would increase gun restrictions. “If it saves lives and there’s support for it from both sides, we welcome it, even if it doesn’t include all the measures we want.”
President Biden is expected to sign a gun bill passed by both chambers. When the outline of the Senate deal was leaked last week, he stated: “Obviously this doesn’t include everything I think is necessary, but it reflects important steps in the right direction and it would signify key gun safety legislation.” that Congress has passed over the decades,” Biden said.
Weapons are a hot topic in American politics. Democrats have wanted to limit the sale and use of guns for years, but Republicans are against it. They adhere to the second article of the United States Constitution from 1787, which states that every resident has the right to bear a gun. Earlier, the House of Representatives already passed a new gun law, but could not count on the support of the Republicans and was killed.
