of the United States former president Donald Trump has sued the 24/7 cable television company CNN for defamation, among others the financial newspaper Bloomberg and news agency Reuters tell.
Trump claims that CNN has recently stepped up its smear campaign against him because the company fears that he will run for president in 2024.
Trump’s lawyers say in the lawsuit that CNN has tried to tarnish Trump’s reputation “with a series of increasingly scandalous, false and defamatory titles such as racist, Russian servant, rebel and, at worst, Hitler.”
According to the application, Trump is demanding at least $475 million in damages.
“In addition to emphasizing only negative information about Plaintiff and ignoring all positive information about him, CNN has sought to use its enormous influence — as an allegedly ‘reliable’ news source — to discredit Plaintiff in the eyes of its viewers and readers,” the lawyers wrote.
According to the lawyers, CNN’s purpose is to “beat Trump politically”.
Since his presidency, Trump has sued several of his opponents with rather poor success. A federal judge in Florida last month dismissed her lawsuit accusing her 2016 presidential challenger Hillary Clinton and dozens of others conspiring against him.
CNN has not yet commented on the matter.
The lawsuit comes at the same time that the US Department of Justice has targeted Trump for a criminal investigation over government documents stored at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
