“The two simultaneous explosions” occurred on a road parallel to the headquarters of the ministry, leaving “many victims”, said Somali police spokesman Sadiq Dudish, adding, “We will provide more details later.”
The authorities reported that many people were killed or injured in the bombings, but they do not have a total number yet. No one immediately claimed responsibility.
The Mogadishu attack occurred on the day the president, prime minister and other senior officials are meeting to discuss countering violent extremism, particularly by the al-Qaeda affiliate al-Shabab.
Al-Shabab often targets the capital with attacks on prominent sites, starting with bombings and then clashing with security forces. The group had stormed the headquarters of the Ministry of Education in 2015.
The new attack took place at Zobi Junction, which was the scene of a massive al-Shabab blast in 2017 that killed more than 500 people.
