The explosion was caused by a methane gas leak
At least two people have died and eight have disappeared this Sunday after the collapse of a building due to an explosion caused by a methane gas leak in the Italian town of Ravanusa, in Sicily, according to Italian emergency services.
A body has been found in the rubble, seven people remain unaccounted for and two women have been rescued alive, the Sicilian civil protection unit (DRPC) reported, according to information collected by the Italian agency AGI.
The mayor of Ravanusa has appealed to citizens to give him “a hand” in the face of the “disaster” caused by the explosion that occurred around 8:30 pm (local time), after which several buildings in Ravanusa were affected a municipality located in the province of Agrigento, about 110 kilometers southeast of Palermo.
“The explosion may have been caused by the activation of an elevator,” a member of the Agrigento Fire Brigade told the Italian news agency ANSA.
“In the next few days we will investigate further, but what is certain is that such an explosion is an exceptional event,” he added.
The Italian news agency ANSA has reported that among the disappeared there are two children and a pregnant woman.
