Russia propagandist Solovyov attacks a talk show guest who crossed a line set by Putin’s friend. The confrontation is causing concern.
Moscow – Vladimir Solovyov, a well-known propagandist and friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is notorious for his ability to change his viewpoints, which earned him the nickname “Chameleon.” Despite his adaptability, the TV star places great value on his credibility. When Vitaly Tretyakov, dean of the Moscow State University’s Higher School of Television, accused him of lying in a recent talk show episode, Solovyov responded promptly and directly.
Solovyov was not actually actively involved in the heated debate about representative democracy between Tretyakov and the Russian political scientist Dmitri Kulikov. But when he intervened as moderator and accused Tretyakov of judging the experts and their statements after the broadcasts, Tretyakov crossed a line. “You are lying!” he countered Solovyov, as a video clip from the YouTube channel Russian Media Monitor with English transcript.
The fun stops when lies occur: Putin friend Solovyov draws consequences for accusation
The reaction of Solovyov, who has long been a talk show host on Russian state television, was not long in coming and was fierce: “If you have the audacity to accuse me of lying, you either do not understand what you are saying or you have completely stopped understanding the meaning of words.” Solovyov is known for his threats and incitement, especially in connection with the war in Ukraine, but he has rarely addressed them to his own guests.
“I will not allow anyone to speak to me like that. You can work, you can speak, you can exist, but please forget about my existence. No one can accuse me of lying,” the moderator continued. As Tretyakov left the room, Solovyov threatened him with an indictment. “You don’t have to scare me with your connections,” Tretyakov replied.
In the past, Solovyov had already reacted similarly clearly to an alleged accusation of lying by a viewer. “When you are in Russia, we will find you. We will find out everything about you. You will never know peace again,” the propagandist replied during a broadcast on Russian state television Rossiya 1.
Putin friend argues: Russia leader needs trust
After Solovyov threw his critic out of the program, he commented on the previous discussion on representative democracy. “I think and am deeply convinced that the idea of representative government is deeply flawed because it presupposes a limited ability of the person being represented,” political scientist Kulikov had previously said.
Solovyov argued that there was no need to divide representation between different population groups and compared taking office to a judgment from God. “If he answers God in his last moment, he answers for his entire life’s path,” the Putin propagandist began.
“When a man goes into government, when he is elected,” said Solovyov, there comes a point where the population says, based on his life path: “We trust you.” The moderator presented the Election in Russia in March as Oath to Vladimir Putin represents.
“Question of personality” in government: Putin henchman calls National Socialism the highest stage of development in Germany
Who that is, is a “question of personality,” Solovyov explained. In the debate about government systems, he advocated “absolutely pure forms. When everything superficial is discarded.” When a talk show guest replied that Hitler also had an agenda “that suited Germany,” Solovyov replied: “I’m talking about pure forms. That is, by the way, the reason why people say that German National Socialism is the highest stage of development in this line of German society.”
This was not the first time that the presenter, who was born into a Jewish family, had shown himself to be a friend of Hitler. At the same time, he also used Hitler comparisons to attack other politicians. Solovyov has also compared German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to Hitler. (lismah)
