American Congressman Massie called the seizure of Russian assets short-sighted
American Congressman Thomas Massie called the West’s plans to seize Russian assets short-sighted, emphasizing that this reduces the desire of other countries to invest in US national debt, reports RIA News.
“I think it is very short-sighted on the part of our government to freeze the assets of other countries, including Russia. This sends a signal to the world that if we buy our debt, we may default at some point,” he said.
The politician noted that such approaches are extremely dangerous for the United States, as they increase the price that the country is forced to pay for maintaining external debt. Massie expressed confidence that Washington’s closest allies will not turn their backs on him, adding that sovereign wealth funds are likely to “moderate their appetite” for financing the US national debt.
Earlier it became known that the growth of US national debt threatens the collapse of the global financial system. According to Business Insider columnist Jennifer Sohr, it has already reached $34 trillion and will grow by another trillion every 100 days.
