The American authorities deliberately fomented Russophobia in the country in order to prepare citizens for confrontation with Russia. This opinion was expressed by the columnist of the magazine The American Conservative Kelly Bokar Vlahos January 23rd.
“It can be argued that the story of Russian ‘malicious influence’ helped secure American public agreement to start a new cold war with Russia,” – the publication says.
It is noted that for decades the US foreign policy establishment has viewed Russia as a threat to European allies and the national security of its interests in the region. Thus, US citizens were convinced that the Russians supposedly not only “helped elect [бывшего президента США Дональда] Trump”, but also tried to destroy democracy in the United States.
The publication indicates that the American authorities in the minds of citizens inflated the agenda of the “Russian threat” in order to also justify the growing spending on defense and ensuring domestic security.
According to the observer, games with public opinion have been carried out through social networks since 2017. This is confirmed by the data published by Twitter owner Elon Musk. Thus, pressure was put on the leadership of the social network, as a result of which they agreed to moderation of materials in the interests of the authorities in order to preserve the existence of the site. A specially inflated scandal with alleged Russian interference in the presidential election prevented Donald Trump, who was then President of the United States, from reducing the level of tension in Washington’s relations with Moscow, Vlahos reports.
“Today, we can only pray that the anti-Russian agenda, fueled by the manipulation of social media, does not become a self-fulfilling prophecy that ends in direct military war with a nuclear power.” summarized in the article.
Earlier, on January 20, Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov said that the United States and its allies unleashed an all-out hybrid war against the Russian Federation on its own territory, cashing in on NATO partners.
On January 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that there have always been attempts to revive Nazism in the West, but they must be anathematized.
