Benghazi (Al-Ittihad)
Yesterday, a UN official stressed the need for Libyans to give priority to unity and ending the ongoing crisis in their country. This came in a statement issued by Stephanie Khoury, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, to congratulate her on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha. Khoury pointed out that “this year’s Eid falls amidst difficult living conditions that Libyans are suffering from, and that the continued state of political impasse and deteriorating economic conditions are now, more than ever, directly affecting the lives of Libyans whose purchasing power has declined and a large number of them are suffering poverty.” Living despite the enormous resources of their country. She continued: “The Libyan people have suffered enough, and it is time for ending this suffering to be a top priority for the Libyan authorities.”
Khoury added: “In this regard, I call on all Libyan parties to be inspired by the values of sacrifice and rapprochement that Eid symbolizes in order to take the positions and decisions necessary to preserve the supreme interest of Libya and ensure prosperity for all its citizens.” Khoury reiterated that the United Nations Support Mission in Libya is committed, within the framework of its good offices, and in line with its mandate, to work with all parties to end the current situation, preserve the unity and sovereignty of Libya, and ensure a stable and prosperous present and future for all its people.
