President Dina Boluarte’s multiple contradictions about her collection of high-end watches and undeclared jewelry have given rise to the most significant setback since the case was uncovered in mid-March. This Monday, the National Prosecutor, Juan Carlos Villena, has formalized a constitutional complaint against Boluarte for the alleged crime of improper passive bribery to the detriment of the State.
According to the tax document, Pedro Castillo’s successor received three Rolexes, gold earrings and a Bangle bracelet with 94 diamonds in exchange for issuing a series of decrees that benefited the regional government of Ayacucho, headed by Wilfredo Oscorima, through the increase of budget items. Around eight requests to grant an additional budget were admitted by the Executive through six supreme decrees and two emergency decrees.
As it is remembered, at the beginning Boluarte hinted that the Rolexes were from “yesterday” and that all his possessions were “the fruit of his effort.” However, after the discovery of the podcast The Encerrona, the president alleged that they had been a loan from Oscorima, whom she considered a close friend. And that her sin had been to accept them and want to represent Peru in the best way. In a press conference, Boluarte tried to make the public believe that her earrings and rings were actually imitations.
“Did they say he wore Cartier? This is the fine jewelry bracelet and I wear it publicly and transparently. They also talked about a $70,000 cultured pearl necklace and earrings set. Completely false. These earrings and this necklace are from the Unique brand. I’ve had it for eight years,” she said in the first week of April.
Since then, President Boluarte remained distant without speaking to the press. This is compounded by the fact that a flood of accusations came to him that he has not responded to clearly, such as the investigation by the weekly Hildebrandt in his Thirteen indicating that he was away for two weeks in mid-2023 to undergo a series of cosmetic surgeries.
The latest scandal was the arrest of his brother Nicanor Boluarte and his lawyer Mateo Castañeda, both accused of influence peddling. Castañeda is accused of having tried to bribe two senior police officers. Mateo Castañeda would have promised to keep Harvey Colchado in charge of the command that provided support to the Special Team of Prosecutors against Corruption and who was suspended on his birthday for staging the raid on the president’s house. the position in exchange for valuable information that could destabilize the Attorney General, Juan Carlos Villena.
It was precisely Villena who filed the constitutional complaint against the president. An additional detail is that last week, the National Board of Justice definitively removed the former National Prosecutor, Patricia Benavides, from her position for having interfered in the investigations of her sister Enma, also a judge, accused of having freed 41 defendants. for drug trafficking. Rolexgate It seems to be the strongest wall facing a head of state whose approval has fallen to 5%.
