The Panama Canal will progressively increase the daily transit of ships to 34 next Julyas well as the maximum authorized draft before the arrival of the rainy season and the improvement in the water levels of the artificial lakes that feed the road, the administration of the interoceanic strip reported this Tuesday, June 11.
Following the current and projected level of Gatun Lake for the coming weeks, and as a consequence of the arrival of the rainy season in the Panama Canal Hydrographic Basin
This decision was made “following the current and projected level of Gatun Lake for the coming weeks, and as a consequence of the arrival of the rainy season in the Panama Canal Hydrographic Basin,” stated the official information.
The Panama Canal added that it continues with “daily monitoring of existing weather conditions to implement the necessary operational actions in the face of increased rainfall in its hydrographic basin.”.
It is approaching its optimal scenario
The seasonal drought of 2023, longer than usual and enhanced by the El Niño phenomenon, forced to gradually reduce the number of daily stepswhich reached 22 in November but never met the worst predicted scenario: 18 transits per day last February.

The Canal administration also said, on April 9, that it hoped that the arrival of the rainy season would allow it to “progressively increase daily transits again until reaching the 36” that it manages under normal conditions, by 2025.
The Panamanian waterway serves more than 180 maritime routes connecting 170 countries and reaching some 1,920 ports around the world.
