Ever since King Louis XVI of France and his wife Queen Marie Antoinette were beheaded in 1793, misfortune began for one of his sons, Luis Carlos Borbón.
Luis Carlos was considered as the royal heir, since he was the last male child left to the monarchs and, therefore, the Dauphin (name given to the crown princes to the throne of France who were legitimate children of the reigning monarch ) he was renamed Louis XVII.

Although he was separated from his mother, Marie Antoinette, shortly before she was beheaded, he was still fortunate that his son would go on to rule France. However, that could not be his fate.
In 1789 came the French Revolution: a social and political conflict in which different episodes of violence were experienced in France and other European nations that, at the time, challenged the supporters and opponents of the system known as the ‘Old Regime’.
Given that, for the revolutionaries, the fact that there was or existed a possible royal heir meant a threat that would end the plans of the revolution.
So, Luis Carlos had to be locked up in the Temple Tower, a place that functioned as a prison for the royal family in its last days. There, according to the story highlighted by the ‘BBC’, the prince suffered torture, painful punishment and a desolate separation from his family.

However, there are versions that assert that Louis XVII managed to escape from said prison, thanks to the help of an anonymous person who infiltrated the prison, took out the prince and left another child to pose as him.
2000 years passed and the death of Louis XVII was never resolved nor exactly clarified, since it was not certain that he had died in prison, but there was no evidence that he had escaped.
After the French Revolution, men of all social classes vociferously claimed to be the lost ‘Dauphin’, but since there was no evidence, it was impossible to believe their words.

Did he run away or did he die?
Being locked up in terrible conditions, his health began to deteriorate rapidly until he died. Given this, one of the many investigations carried out established that Luis had died of tuberculosis of the lymph nodes.
Neverthelesshis death became a mystery for centuriesas different hypotheses appeared that the only heir to the kings of France had not died in prison, since he managed to escape, which triggered more than one man to claim to be the royal Dauphin (heir to the throne).
Consequently, several European scientists had to intervene in the story. A) Yes, They took on the task of looking for Luis Carlos’s DNA and comparing it with that of a relative. The study was led by the Universities of Leuven in Belgium and the University of Münster in Germany.
“The fact that this could give us answers that we have searched for centuries was even a challenge for me that I couldn’t say no to,” said Jean-Jacques Cassiman, a professor of human genetics consulted by the BBC and who was in charge. Of the investigation.

After that, they compared it with hair samples from several members of the royal family, including Marie Antoinette and, in 2000, they finally confirmed that the young man who died in prison had been him and that His death occurred when he was only 10 years old. They found him malnourished, with scabies and torture marks.
Finally, the prince was able to rest in peace next to his parents, so a discreet ceremony was held in which his heart was deposited in the crypt of the Basilica of Saint Denis, in Paris. There are the remains of a large part of the French kings.
After so many loose ends, Louis XVII was buried in the royal crypt alongside the remains of his parents, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
