France faces significant challenges as the Paris 2024 Olympic Games approach. From security to logistics, the French Government is working to address crucial concerns ahead of the July 26 opening date. With terrorism alert raised and concerns over infrastructure and transportation, France is looking to ensure the success of the world-renowned sporting event. We analyze the challenges of the JJ. OO. from Paris 100 days after its start.
With the countdown to the long-awaited Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the French Government is facing a series of challenges ranging from security to logistics.
One of the main challenges facing France is guaranteeing the security of the event, especially after a branch of the Islamic State jihadist group claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a concert hall in Moscow at the end of March. In response, the Government has raised the country's terrorism alert to the maximum of three levels, preparing for any imminent threat.
With the inauguration date getting closer, scheduled for July 26, France aims to hold an open-air inaugural event for the first time in history. The plan includes more than 10,000 athletes sailing along 6 kilometers of the Seine River, creating an impressive image to kick off the games. However, given the security risks, President Emmanuel Macron has confirmed the existence of alternative plans, such as limiting the celebrations to Trocadero Square or holding the event inside the emblematic Stade de France in the capital.
In addition to security challenges, concerns remain about infrastructure and transportation readiness for the event. There is uncertainty over whether all transport systems will be ready in time, compounded by the risk of strikes that could affect mobility during the games.
To analyze these challenges and more, we spoke with our guests in this edition of The Debate:
