The work of the 33rd regular session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the summit level will begin in Manama today, Thursday, under the chairmanship of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, with the participation of Arab leaders or their representatives, in addition to the Secretary-General of the Arab League. The summit will discuss many political, development, security, economic, social, cultural and media issues included in the draft agenda prepared by the Arab foreign ministers in its final form in light of the results of a series of preparatory meetings, as well as adopting draft resolutions on the items included in the draft agenda and the draft final declaration “Bahrain Declaration.” Which will be issued by Arab leaders. The draft agenda includes 23 items, dealing with various issues related to joint Arab action in the political, economic, social, cultural, media and security fields, and Arab cooperation with international and regional groupings, including the report of the presidency of the 33rd summit on the activity of the body to follow up on the implementation of decisions and commitments, and the report of the Secretary-General of the Arab League on The process of joint Arab action.
The draft agenda also includes an item on the Palestinian issue and the Arab-Israeli conflict. This item includes several topics, including following up on the political developments of the Palestinian issue, the Arab-Israeli conflict, activating the Arab Peace Initiative, and Israeli developments and violations in the occupied city of Jerusalem.
The project also includes supporting the budget of the State of Palestine, the steadfastness of the Palestinian people, following up on settlement developments, the apartheid wall, prisoners and refugees, the conditions of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and development in the occupied territories. Amidst what the world is witnessing now of growing international movements towards recognizing the State of Palestine, the summit is being held, which enhances global acceptance of the issue of establishing a Palestinian state in the territories occupied in 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The issue of establishing an independent, sovereign Palestinian state on the occupied Palestinian territories tops the agenda of the summit, which constitutes intense Arab pressure and action, with the aim of increasing the scope of international support for the rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state, which is consistent with international legitimacy resolutions. The former Palestinian ambassador to Cairo, and its permanent representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Barakat Al-Farra, explained that the 33rd Arab Summit constitutes strong political and diplomatic support for the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state, and its embodiment on the ground at the line of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The Palestinian diplomat said, in a statement to Al-Ittihad: The strong support represented by the Bahrain summit for efforts to establish a Palestinian state coincides with the emphasis on a just solution to the refugee issue, in accordance with United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 194, which allows Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and compensate them for losses. In turn, Bahraini political analyst, Saad Rashid, explained that the Palestinian issue and its various dimensions represent one of the summit’s most prominent priorities, especially the issue of establishing a Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967, as the summit aims to increase the area of global acceptance and international support for the Palestinian state, through Arab movements. The Bahraini political analyst said: “The Bahrain summit returns the issue of establishing a Palestinian state to the forefront of the regional and global scene. “Given that it is an important summit awaited by various countries of the world, including the major world powers, Arab leaders seek to benefit from this momentum to bring the Palestinian state to light.”
The draft agenda of the Arab Summit includes 33 items on Arab affairs and national security and contains several topics, including solidarity with Lebanon, developments in the situation in Syria, support for peace and development in Sudan, developments in the situation in Libya and Yemen, support for Somalia and the United Comoros, and a peaceful solution to the Djibouti-Eritrean border dispute.
