This afternoon the Ligurian vice president will meet “the representatives of the outdoors who contacted us to increase the ranks of volunteers and make themselves available, demonstrating, once again, the spirit of the Ligurians capable of creating a system in emergencies”.
African swine fever, wolves can stop it. The discovery in Piedmont
THE wolves can contribute to the contrast of African swine fever. If the wolf eats meat from infected animals, the virus in its gut dies out. This is what emerges from a study conducted on samples of areas of Poland, reported in an article in the latest issue of Piemonte Parchi, the scientific dissemination periodical of Piedmont’s protected areas.
“I study – reads the report – reports the conclusion that when wolves consume PSA positive wild boar meat, the virus does not survive passing through the intestinal tract. Also, the wolves they can limit transmission by removing infectious carrion “.
An important factor in reducing the risk of expansion is the early detection and destruction of infected carcasses, in which teams of hunters and volunteers are actively engaged, as the virus resists for several weeks and wild boars have a habit of approaching and feeding on them.
African swine fever is not a zoonosis, therefore it is not transmitted to humans, but it is almost 100% lethal for wild boars and pigs, and death occurs after 3-7 days, at most 10, from the onset of symptoms. The epidemic wave has an estimated speed between 20 and 40 km per year. There is currently no cure and it is spread by direct contact between animals, or carried by humans, with vehicles, clothing and equipment.
