Finland first skier Iivo Niskanen is approaching the New Year’s Eve Tour de Ski Tour with a different plan than ever before.
Although there is only a month to go to the start of the Beijing Olympics at the end of the Tour, Niskanen, one of the few Finnish medal nominees for individual competitions at the Games, is preparing to ski the Tour in its entirety.
This setting has never existed before in the value winter when it has been realistic to expect a medal from Niskanen.
For example, in the seasons when Niskanen won the World Championships (2017) and Olympic Gold (2018), he started the tour but suspended the contract completely as planned after a few races. At that time, the idea was to get just a tough sense of competition and at the same time save energy for the season’s championships.

“I’m going to ski the Tour as far as possible and as long as it makes sense. If I’m in a pretty good position, the effort is to ski the final ascent as well. If I’m not in a good enough position, I’ll hardly finish skiing. But basically I will ski to the end of the Tour, ”Niskanen said on Tuesday by phone from Davos, Switzerland, where he has been training in good conditions.
Due to the proximity of the Olympics, the Tour has only six races this time, which means it is lighter than normal.
“When I’ve had to go a little more moderately, the Tour is doing quite well for a good sequel when it recovers well. I believe that my own mood will improve as the Tour progresses, ”said Niskanen, who spends Christmas at the Tour’s starting point in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
Maltilla Niskanen pointed out that he had to skip the mc race in Davos a week and a half ago for “health reasons” and as a precaution.
Niskanen said he did his first harder workout in a week and a half on Tuesday.
On the tour, Niska is particularly interested in two traditional 15-kilometer races. The first of these will be the second race of the tour with a temporary start in Lenzerheide at an altitude of about 1,400 meters.
The second is the last leg of the ski run in the Val di Fiemme, Italy. “I hope for a good performance in those races.”
Niskanen wants to perform well in the free 15-kilometer combined race in Oberstdorf, Germany, even though this time he doesn’t ski on a tough track like last winter’s World Championships.
“I hope it’s not a break for me.”
Instead, the Tour’s two sprints (1st and 4th) will probably be lighter for Niskanen, as he himself doesn’t expect to go very far in the wilderness.

He missed Ruka’s second race due to the severe frost in the “health ahead” spirit. He interrupted the next race (15 km / h) in Lillehammer, Norway because of problems with the skis.
In the next day’s post, Niskanen was the fastest in his streak, and a week later the Davos race was completely missed.
“Before Ruka, however, there were four races, so there has been even more skiing than in some other seasons. Making this a little calmer is hopefully a safer way to go on the Tour, and the Tour would provide a better stimulus when there’s not too much rampage racing. ”
Niskanen emphasized that the main thing is to stay healthy from now on.
“Failing in Lillehammer and missing the race here hasn’t caused any stress. I make solutions so that everyone is well at the Olympics. ”
The Tour de Ski will compete in Switzerland, Germany and Italy from 28 December 2021 to 4 January. 2022
