The Serbian national team as such has not had a brilliant time at the World Cups. The one who had an important step was Yugoslavia and FR Yugoslavia. Until the year 2006 we could not know Serbia as the team that it is today. In these most recent years they have not been very successful, but if we look at their origins they have been one of the great powers in the early days of the World Cup.
Here we leave you the five best participations of this team in the World Cups:
They qualified as second in the group tied on points with France (4 each) and faced Germany in the quarterfinals. An early goal from Helmut Rahn knocked Yugoslavia out of the semi-finals and they stayed in 8th place in the World Cup.
It was a rather peculiar World Cup. The best of each group would meet in a final group to decide who was the best team in the World Cup. Yugoslavia did not qualify when they coincided in the group stage with Brazil, but being the best second ranked number 5 in the World Cup.
They went through to the knockout stage with four points as second place. It was a rather peculiar World Cup since three teams qualified in their group. Yugoslavia beat Spain 2-1 in the first round but lost on penalties to Argentina in the quarterfinals.
In the first World Cup in history, Yugoslavia in a group of three where Brazil was and only one team qualified, leaving Canarinha out and appearing in the semifinals against Uruguay. In this World Cup there were no eighths or quarters. They lost to the charrúas 6-1 and were ranked number 4.
Yugoslavia qualified for the knockout stage alongside the USSR and beat West Germany 1-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals they faced Czechoslovakia and they lost 3-1. In the match for third and fourth place they lost to Chile, thus remaining in 4th place in the World Cup.
