“There chronic kidney disease it affects 1 out of 10 Italians, mainly the elderly, diabetics, hypertensives, obese and heart patients: it is a significant public health problem with economic, social and individual implications. The purpose of today’s meeting is to put in writing point by point what needs to be done, taking for granted that we have to focus on early diagnosis”. So Stefano Bianchi, president of the Italian Society of Nephrology (Sin), spoke to Adnkronos Salute on the sidelines of the conference “Challenges and objectives for a new management of chronic kidney disease” which was held today in the Senate.
“Today we have therapeutic opportunities that were unthinkable until a few years ago – assures Bianchi – we have drugs capable of slowing down the regression of the disease and perhaps of stopping it and reducing cardiovascular complications. Effective and safe drugs, largely reimbursed therapies. Now that we have these weapons we have to learn how to use them and we have to find ways for these drugs to get to patients”.
“The policy document on chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is in an advanced stage of development – underlines Bianchi – tends to outline the general behavioral aspects of taking care of patients with CKD, by now a pathology that is accompanied by a significant increase of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality”.
