Before the New Year, cyber fraudsters switched to combined schemes to deceive Russians. Fyodor Chunizhekov, an analyst at Positive Technologies, warned Russians about the dangerous New Year’s tricks of the criminals in an interview with Lenta.ru.
One of the more popular combined schemes, he said, uses bulk mailing and bogus call center operators. “First, the victim receives a letter with a ‘lucrative’ offer and a phone number to call in order to receive a discount or gift. Then the user goes to the operator, who gives instructions for downloading the malware, “Chunizhenkov noted.
In addition, on the eve of the holiday period, the share of using clone sites of well-known online stores increased. When clicking on such a malicious link, the victim goes to the payment page for the order and enters his bank card details there, in fact, transferring them to the attackers.

“In the context of preparations for the New Year, cybercriminals most often use the news feed about big discounts or exclusive offers. It takes cybercriminals a long time to carry out targeted attacks; they are used in attacks aimed at a specific company. Therefore, in most cases, mass mailings with malicious attachments are used, which will arouse the interest of a larger number of users than with a targeted attack, ”Chunizhenkov said.
Cybercriminals are also actively exploiting the interest of Russians in applications with New Year’s pictures for the desktop or built-in animation on their devices. Such software products may contain Trojans that steal user credentials.
“In order not to darken our New Year mood, we recommend staying vigilant, checking information about all offers and promotions on the official websites of organizations. You should not click on links obtained from unreliable sources and launch suspicious attachments, ”Chunizhenkov warned.
Also, according to him, it is worth setting up two-factor authentication for logging into key services and applications. This primarily applies to e-mail, banking applications and social networks. In addition, for purchases on the Internet, it is better to get a separate card with a set limit on transactions.
