XYZ School: pirated games worth 118 billion rubles were downloaded in Russia
Russian pirates downloaded games worth tens of billions of rubles in the first quarter of 2024. This was reported in a study by the online school in the field of game development XYZ School (part of the Ultimate Education holding), which was reviewed by the editors of Lenta.ru.
According to an analysis of the state of the market and a survey of gamers, in the first three months of the year, gamers downloaded games worth 118 billion rubles from the Internet. On average, each “pirate” downloaded 6,800 rubles worth of video games.
According to experts, the level of “thefts” of video games has remained virtually unchanged since the end of 2023 and amounted to 74 percent versus 73 percent of the total number of gamers. 54 percent of “pirates” downloaded no more than three unlicensed copies.
“Russian gamers often find themselves hostage to circumstances, such as economic sanctions and restrictions on access to international payment systems, which makes it much more difficult to legally purchase games,” XYZ executive director Emma Yusova explained the level of piracy. According to Yusova, the problem of piracy in Russia requires a comprehensive approach to solving. Representative XYZ said the best way to combat this phenomenon is to develop new ways to monetize games.
At the end of April, XYZ School experts said that Russian gamers spent tens of billions of rubles on games in the first quarter of 2024. The growing demand was explained by an increase in gaming activity during the January long weekend.
