Russian invasion|Just before his visit to Beijing, Putin seems to have a more positive attitude towards China’s peace proposals. He also called Xi Jinping “wise and visionary”.
Russian president Vladimir Putin says he supports “China’s plan for a peaceful resolution of the crisis in Ukraine”. China News Agency Xinhua published Putin’s written comments early Wednesday.
Putin also estimates that China fully understands the geopolitical background factors of the crisis.
China already announced a 12-point one a year ago the peace plan, which was not very detailed. At that time, both Russia and Ukraine had a strong attitude towards it, reports the news agency Reuters.
The United States and the EU were disappointed that China did not directly condemn Russia’s large-scale attack on Ukraine at the time. China also opposed “unilateral sanctions”.
Now Putin praised China’s plan and subsequent statements by the Chinese leadership, which are “in line” with last year’s plan.
Ukrainian in the peace plan drawn up, Russia must withdraw from the territories it occupies, compensate for the damage it has caused, and agree to the investigation of war crimes and the sentencing of war criminals.
Ukraine has gotten several countries and delegations to promise a peace meeting in Switzerland in June. Russia has not been invited, but Ukraine has tried hard to get China involved.
China has indeed agreed to some preliminary discussions about the peace conference, which may puzzle Putin and partially explain his more positive stance on China’s peace initiative.
According to Putin, Russia has not refused peace talks and is ready for dialogue with Ukraine, as long as “the viewpoints of all countries participating in the conflict” are taken into account.
In an interview with Xinhua, Putin also flattered the Chinese leader Xi Jinping calling this “wise and visionary”.
Putin is heading to China for a state visit on Thursday.
