The board of directors of Prisa Media, in its meeting held this Thursday, has decided to dismiss Juan Luis Cebrián as honorary president of EL PAÍS. The announcement of his next collaboration as a journalist in another medium constitutes a material breach of the terms of the collaboration contract currently in force between Juan Luis Cebrián and EL PAÍS, in which an exclusive relationship was established, as reported by Prisa in a release.
The authorization to collaborate in another medium, required to proceed with his new project, was not requested or communicated at any time by Cebrián, thus breaching his contract.
For this reason, the board of directors of Prisa Media, in a meeting held this morning, unanimously considers that the status of Honorary President of the newspaper requires contractual compliance that has not occurred in this case. Consequently, he has decided to dismiss him.
Juan Luis Cebrián (Madrid, 79 years old) directed EL PAÍS from its first appearance, in May 1976, until November 1988, at which time he was named CEO of the newspaper and of Prisa. At the head of EL PAÍS he played a very relevant role in the transition process of Spanish politics from dictatorship to democracy. In May 2018, the journalist and writer left the executive positions in the group and was named Honorary President of EL PAÍS. Cebrián belongs to the Royal Spanish Academy.
