Mario Desiati, author of ‘Spatriati’ (Einaudi), is the winner of the 2022 Strega Prize. Desiati obtained 166 votes. The Apulian writer, who had already entered five in 2011 with ‘Ternitti’, won the 76th edition beating the competition of Claudio Piersanti who with ‘Quel’ Quel cursed Vronskij ‘(Rizzoli) who finished second with 90 votes.
Desiati did not allow himself the traditional toast with Liquore Strega immediately after the proclamation of his victory by Emanuele Trevi. “I’m leaving this bottle untouched,” he said. “I will drink it in Puglia in memory of the writers of my land – he added – In particular of Maria Teresa Di Leave who won the Witch in 1995 but she could not drink this bottle because she died a few months earlier”.
