On Monday, Portugal’s left hailed the advantage of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the first round of Brazil’s elections over President Jair Bolsonaro and showed confidence in the victory of the Workers’ Party candidate on the 30th.
“We continue together. It will be hard, but the final destination is worth the trip. Valor and cold blood, and a lot of solidarity with all and all the democrats who will take Lula to the presidency in the second round”, wrote on Twitter the deputy Joana Mortágua, from Bloco Left (BE).
Deputy Rui Tavares, from the Free movement, dismissed the defeatist messages and was convinced that Lula’s victory is “likely and crucial”.
The Socialist Party, which governs Portugal with an absolute majority, trusted, in a statement, in the final victory of Lula, so that “Brazil rejects authoritarian and anti-democratic deviations”.
Portuguese right exalts Bolsonaro
On the opposite side, the leader of the right-wing Chega party, André Ventura, called on the population to participate in the second round, to support the current president of the country.
“It is necessary to transform Brazil, it is necessary to vote and reinforce confidence in Jair Bolsonaro”, said the representative of the party, in a statement sent to local media.
In Portugal, where more than 45,000 Brazilians live, Lula won with a large majority, obtaining around 70% of the votes in the country.
