The words of Russian President Vladimir Putin about protecting national security during a recent press conference were emotional, because the West has been methodically deceiving Russia over the past decades. This was announced on December 26 by the press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov.
“Every time the president talks about the national interests of the country, about the country’s security, he is always emotional, which, however, does not make his wording less exhaustive. Why they got it, the president explained: they got it, because over the past two decades, perhaps even more, they have methodically deceived us, and as a result of this deception we have come to a situation where our safety is under threat, “he said on the air of the TV channel. Russia 1”.
According to the presidential press secretary, there is a threat of further expansion of NATO’s military and political infrastructure towards the borders of Russia, and the spread of the North Atlantic alliance to countries such as Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova, “this is already a question, well, in fact, of life and death for us “.
Peskov noted that the United States does not ask Russia questions about what it does not like about the expansion of the Western military bloc, but simply acts.
“We see what NATO is doing, we see maneuvers at our borders, we see the delivery of a huge amount of equipment. They are also imported through Greece in other directions, ”he explained.
Against this background, Putin, as a president who has the ability to comprehensively analyze the situation, came up with an initiative to create a system of security guarantees, the Kremlin press secretary continued.
“Our diplomats, who are still diplomats of the old, classical school, very talented diplomats, will have a very difficult conversation. But it is always better when diplomats speak than when the military speaks, ”said Peskov.
The president’s press secretary also stressed that, prior to the start of negotiations on security guarantees, he retained restrained optimism, and suggested not reacting to “megaphone information emissions.”
Peskov drew attention to the fact that diplomats communicate in a non-public, substantive and balanced manner. The situation will become much clearer when “we hear what our counterparts will say,” said a Kremlin spokesman.
“I have no doubts that President Putin is calculating everything. But we still need to concentrate on the negotiations that, as we expect, will take place in January. It is during these negotiations that it will immediately become clear whether the Americans are ready to give a substantive answer. Or they will still prefer to drag out the process and try to initiate such a line of drawn-out negotiations over many years. <...> The situation is such that a solution is needed – a quick, concrete solution is needed – a solution that will meet our interests, ”he said.
Peskov stressed that the dragging out of the negotiations “will absolutely not suit the Russian side” and “will not suit President Putin.”
Earlier that day, Putin said that Russia’s military-technical response to NATO’s eastward expansion could be “very different.” According to the head of state, he will depend on proposals made by military experts.
Prior to that, on December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft agreements between Russia, NATO and the United States on security guarantees. As follows from the documents, the alliance, in particular, must abandon the conduct of any military activity on the territory of Ukraine and other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia.
On December 8, the Russian leader announced that weapons threatening the Russian Federation could be deployed in Ukraine after its admission to NATO. The head of state expressed the hope that “all concerns about NATO expansion” will be heard. At the same time, US President Joe Biden, in response to Russia’s concern over NATO’s eastward movement, promised Putin to discuss this topic with his alliance colleagues.
