Orienteering legend Minna Kauppi ran the third leg of the Lahteites. The top three was the team’s goal, but before the relay took off in the last moments, Kaupin’s faith, 41, was shaken.
“So at the end, we didn’t believe in big changes in the results, when we were sixth, and there were obstacles ahead that we didn’t have,” Kauppi explained.
The teammates were happy with Mattila’s final effort.
“It’s been about 17 years since Venlo was last in the top three. But I trusted our young Elisa like a mountain,” said nine-time world champion Kauppi.
